"At your service, Madame" 🖤
I'm working on this illustration inspired by the 1920s-30s, an era when cinema began exploring the figure of the maid not just as a service character, but as a catalyst for forbidden desires and erotic tensions.
The contrast between the domestic uniform and the lady's elegance hides power dynamics, seduction, and obsession that auteur cinema has masterfully portrayed.
Here are some films that aesthetically inspired me:
Personal Maid (1931) - Pre-Code cinema, when Hollywood dared more.
Diary of a Chambermaid (1946) by Jean Renoir - Paulette Goddard observing the hidden desires of the bourgeoisie.
Diary of a Chambermaid (1964) by Luis Buñuel - Jeanne Moreau in a more cynical version, between fetishisms and repressed impulses.
The Housemaid (1960) by Kim Ki-young - Erotic obsession that destroys a family.
La Cagna (1972) by Marco Ferreri - Morbid relationship between master and maid.
La Governante (1974) by Salvatore Samperi - Erotic power games.
The Way of a Maid (2008) by Jeon Soo-il - Intimate and erotic Korean cinema.
