The Autumn Candle Ritual: The Pleasure of Slowing Down

The return of autumn always brings back one of my favourite evening rituals: lighting a candle and letting the room change around it.

I like the small interruption it creates. Striking the match, waiting for the fragrance to begin filling the room and watching the light soften are simple gestures, but they mark the moment when the day can finally become a little slower.

Perhaps that is why I am especially drawn to scented candles at this time of year. Fragrance becomes part of the room in a different way when evenings are longer and choosing a candle feels almost like choosing a perfume for the house.

Here is a selection of favourites for this autumn, beautiful to light up and also to display.
